15A MPPT Charge Controller FAQ

How do I know if my controller is working?

You have a single LED on the controller. This will be green when the circuit is producing power and connected correctly. If this light is RED then it could be one of the reasons below -
• No solar input from the panel (check panel functionality)
• Panel is not connected (check connections)
• No sun outside (wait for the sun to come up)
• Very low sunlight levels (wait for a brighter day)
• The battery is not connected (check connections)
• Battery is below 11V DC (remove battery and recharge with a recommended charger)

How do I connect my phone?

You must first install the software from the App Store corresponding to your phone. Once it's installed, open the app and click the connect button. This will search for Bluetooth devices. Select the device called PV-xxxxxx (the x’s will be numbers). The app will now ask for a password. These are the numbers after PV-. Once entered, you will see the data coming from the controller.

Where is the app available to download?

The App is available to download from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, depending on the device you are using. Please search for “PVMobileSuite”

I have a battery bank with two batteries in it. Should I connect them to battery '1' and battery '2'?

No. The two battery outputs from the controller are for separate circuits, such as your leisure battery circuit (BAT1) and your engine battery circuit (BAT2).

Can I charge a 24V battery from solar with this controller?

Yes, this is possible, but you will need a solar panel input to the controller above 40V, i.e. a 24V solar panel or 2 x 12V solar panels connected in series. The controller will then automatically adjust the voltage to suit a 12V or 24V battery, depending on what you have connected to it.

What range does the Bluetooth have?

On average, Bluetooth has a range of around 10m (line of sight). However, this will change depending on what is between you and the controller, such as walls, etc.

Can I see what my solar system is doing from home?

If your controller is within 10m, then yes, there is a chance you can see the data from it. If it's over 10m, then it's out of Bluetooth range, and you will not be able to see the data. There is no GSM or WiFi connection.

Why is MPPT better than PWM?

Most modern charge controllers use Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), which slowly lowers the amount of power supplied to the batteries as they get closer to a fully charged status. A PWM controller allows the batteries to be fully charged with less stress on the battery, extending battery life. It can also keep batteries in a fully charged state (called “float”) for an indefinite period.

The most recent and best solar charge controller type is Maximum Power Point Tracking, or MPPT for short. MPPT controllers can convert any excess voltage into amps, giving you up to 20% extra power from the same panel in less-than-ideal conditions e.g. overcast and cloudy.

What is the maximum amount of solar I can connect?

This controller has a 225W input limit for a 12V battery or up to 400W for a 24V battery.

I have a gel battery. Can I set the controller to work more efficiently with this?

Yes, in the app's battery option, you can select the battery's chemistry. Once you have selected it, you must send it to the controller using the 'send' button on the same screen. The controller will reboot during this process but then start with the correct battery charging profile.

I have specific settings for my battery. Can I program the controller?

Yes, in the battery options area of the app, you can select custom (please make sure you have set the system voltage first). This will let you change all the charging parameters. Once you have completed it, you must send it to the controller using the ‘send’ button. We would advise that unless you have all of the specific details required for your battery to create a charging profile, you use the appropriate pre-programmed profile provided in the app.

Can I change the password?

Yes, but we don’t recommend it unless you really need to. To do this, click on the app's settings, “Cog,” and go to the reset password area.

What happens if I forget my password after I have changed it?

If you have forgotten a user-set password, you will not be able to connect to it to see your data. Please contact the office at (+44) 1684 774000 and speak to the support team, who should be able to reconnect you.

How much ventilation do I need around this controller?

Your controller will get warm to the touch when it's working. Please make sure you have around 150 mm of space all around the unit and have plenty of ventilation in the position you have installed it. The controller has thermal protection, so if it gets too hot, the power it sends to the battery will be restricted to prevent overheating.

Can I charge my leisure and engine battery from this controller?

Yes, please connect your leisure battery to the BAT1 terminals and your engine battery to the BAT2 terminals. Don’t forget to also install a fuse between each battery and the controller and also select the appropriate battery profile for each battery.

Can I prioritise my engine battery?

By default, the leisure battery on BAT1 is the prioritised battery. You can change this on the second generation controllers by going into the dashboard tab, and above the BAT2 dial is a button marked “Secondary”. Select this button, and it will now say “Primary”. The switchover process may take a few minutes, but that is all you need to do. You can also switch it back at any time by selecting the “Secondary” button above BAT1.

Do I need to install a fuse from the solar panel?

No. However, please make sure you install fuses between the controller and any battery.

Can I install more than one controller to a battery?

Yes, but the efficiency of the solar panels might drop. We suggest contacting our Support Team to discuss your goal, as there may be a more efficient alternative.
