20A & 30A MPPT Pro Plus Charge Controller FAQ

How do I know if my controller is working?

You have 3 LEDs on the controller -

LED1 on the left indicates the presence of solar power and the controller's mode. It should be solid red or flashing red.
If it is off, there is no solar input from the panel, which may be for one of the following reasons –
o The panel is not connected (check connections)
o No sun outside (wait for the sun to come up)
o Very low sunlight levels (wait for a brighter day)
LED2 in the middle shows the battery level and should be a solid green, yellow, or red, depending on the battery’s charge level. If it is flashing, the battery is over-voltage, and the issue should be investigated.
LED3 on the right indicates the controller's charging profile for the battery type. Depending on which profile is active, it can be green, yellow, red, blue, purple, or white.

Where is the app available to download?

The Solar App can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, depending on your device. Please search for “Solar App” or use one of the links below –

How do I connect my phone?

Once the Solar App is installed, open it and click the “+” button at the top right of the screen to search for Bluetooth devices. Once the device has been found, select “ADD” next to the device. The app should then connect to the controller and show the home screen displaying real-time information.

Can I charge a 24V battery from solar with this controller?

Yes, this is possible, but the controller will need a feed from the solar panels above 35V VOC (28V VMP). This can be achieved using a single 24V solar panel like our 125W MHD Rigid Panel or 2 x 12V solar panels connected in series. The controller will then automatically adjust the voltage to suit a 12V or 24V battery, depending on what you have connected to it.

What range has the Bluetooth got?

On average, Bluetooth has a range of around 10m (line of sight). However, this will change depending on what is between you and the controller, such as walls.

Can I see what my solar system is doing from home?

If your controller is within 10m, then yes, you should be able to log in on the app and see the data from the controller. If it's over 10m, then it's likely to be out of Bluetooth range, and you will not be able to see the data.

Why is MPPT better than PWM?

Most modern charge controllers use Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), which slowly lowers the power (current) supplied to the batteries as they get closer to a fully charged status. A PWM controller allows the batteries to be fully charged with less stress on the battery, extending battery life. It can also indefinitely keep batteries in a fully charged state (called “float”).
The most recent and best solar charge controller type is Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT). This type of controller can convert any excess voltage into amps (power), giving you up to 20% extra power from the same panel under certain conditions.

What is the maximum amount of solar I can connect?

STCC20M 20A - maximum solar input of 260W for a 12V battery (520W for 24V)
STCC30M 30A - maximum solar input of 400W for a 12V battery (800W for 24V)

I have an AGM battery. Can I set the controller to work more efficiently with this?

Yes, in the app, you can select the battery's chemistry. Go to the settings page (cog symbol at the top right of the home screen), select the correct battery type for your battery in the box on the right-hand side, and then select “OK.” If the battery type is changed, the controller will reboot.
The options to choose from are –
• AGM Sealed lead-acid (LED3 = Green)
• Gel (Colloidal) lead-acid (LED3 = Yellow)
• Flooded lead-acid (LED3 = Red)
• LiFePO4 Lithium Iron Phosphate
  o 12V (LED3 = Blue)
  o  24V (LED3 = Purple)
• Custom (LED3 = White)

I have specific settings for my battery. Can I program the controller myself?

Yes, on the app's settings page, you can select the “custom” profile (please ensure you set the system voltage first). This will let you change the voltages in the “charger settings” menu to meet the specific needs of your battery type as provided by the manufacturer.

How much ventilation do I need around this controller?

Your controller will get warm to the touch when it’s working. Please ensure you have around 150mm of space around the unit and plenty of ventilation in the position where you wish to install it. If the unit doesn’t have enough ventilation, it may overheat, causing less power to be sent to the battery or even damage the controller.

Can I charge my leisure and engine battery from this controller?

No. This controller is designed to charge your leisure battery efficiently and has no second connection to the engine battery.

Do I need to install a fuse from the solar panel?

No, but you can if you wish to. Look at the short-circuit current rating (ISC) of the solar panel and fit a fuse that is the first rating above that, for example -
• Panel ISC = 8.07A fit a 10A fuse
• Panel ISC = 11.89A fit a 15A fuse

For safety, please ensure a fuse rated to match the controller (20A/30A) is always installed between the controller and the battery.
